When searching for a career, many people do not consider oil and gas jobs because they assume the industry is full of manual labor and dangerous working conditions. While these industry stereotypes may still be true in some cases, oil and gas jobs require a wide variety of educational backgrounds and skills to fill their open positions.

“Since we have so many positions in the field, backgrounds vary greatly,” said Chesapeake Energy Corporation Director of Recruitment Kip Welch.

There is a wide range of oil and gas jobs offered by major energy companies. Many higher level field positions will require a degree or background in mechanical engineering, geology, or chemical engineering. These positions will generally require a B.A., M.S., and in some cases a Ph.D. said Devon Energy Vice President of Human Resources Frank Rudolph.

There are still plenty of positions for applicants seeking oil and gas jobs without an advanced degree. A high school education is required and applicants can expect to find entry-level positions as rig workers and general laborers. These positions will allow for advancement in oil and gas careers.

“We want our employees to succeed and grow within the company. That’s why we encourage promotion from within whenever possible,” Welch said.

Another route to securing an oil and gas job is through interning. These programs can add practical training and experience to a college graduates resume and act as a springboard into oil and gas careers. “A lot of the talent we have comes through our internship program,” said Rudolph.
