First-place Barons hang on to beat Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Oklahoma City had three players who tallied three points Friday night, and the Barons hung on to beat Grand Rapids 5-4 in an American Hockey League game before 7,125 fans at Van Andel Arena.

Teemu Hartikainen and Curtis Hamilton had a goal and assist each, and Mark Arcobello added two assists. The Barons had a 5-2 lead with 11 minutes left in the game, but Grand Rapids rallied when Chris Conner had a power-play goal and Jamie Johnson added an even-strength score 4:05 apart. The Griffins pulled goaltender Tom McCollum for an extra attacker with less than a minute left, but the Barons hung on to win the first of a three-game road trip.

Oklahoma City improved to 13-5-0-1 and into a first-place tie with Abbotsford in the Western Conference's West Division. Abbotsford lost 5-0 to San Antonio on Friday night.

Triston Grant, Gilbert Brule and Philippe Cornet also scored for the Barons. Cornet's goal was his team-best 13th of the season.

Barons goaltender Yann Danis made 26 saves, although he was touched for two power-play goals.

Grand Rapids fell to 7-10-1-0.

BARON BITES: Defenseman Alex Plante was returned to the Barons by the Edmonton Oilers on Friday. Plante played in the Oilers' 6-2 win at Nashville on Tuesday. He returned to the Barons in time for Friday night's game at Grand Rapids. Plante has been called up twice this season, playing in two games with Edmonton, which has had injury woes on the defensive end. ...
