On Monday, a special calf sale at the Oklahoma City National Stockyards will benefit military families across this country.

The National Livestock Credit Corporation is conducting the sale, with proceeds going to the All American Beef Battalion, an Ashland, Kan., nonprofit that since 2008 has been using funds raised from such sales to purchase steak dinners for servicemen and servicewomen — and their families.

“We have the best beef in the world, so for deploying troops, those coming home or wounded warrior units, this is how we show our appreciation,” said Bill Broadie, a former Marine and chairman of the beef battalion. “These kids give up so much of their lives for all of us and so many have been on several tours. We just wanted to let them and their families know that we appreciate them.”

The organization is made up of ranchers and others in the beef and cattle industry, he said. They mobilize when they're contacted by a family readiness group about a deploying or returning unit.

“By the end of this year, we'd have fed over 100,000,” Broadie said, including units in Oklahoma.

A sale last year raised $27,000.

Broadie said 100 percent of the money goes to the mission. No salaries are paid to anyone in the organization.

Bryan and Carrie Linn of Verden will donate the 500-pound black weaned calf for the 11 a.m. sale on Monday. Buyers interested in bidding by phone may call direct 239-6248 on Monday.
