That's a bit of an upset, considering Oklahoma's Landry Jones began the season as a contender and Oklahoma State's Brandon Weeden emerged as a suitor as the fall progressed.

While their stars ultimately faded, another Big 12 quarterback's continued to shine.

Baylor's Robert Griffin III is expected to win the trophy Saturday night – and it probably will not be all that close, with Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck and Alabama running back Trent Richardson trailing Griffin in exit and straw polls.

Griffin's candidacy was centered on Baylor achieving things the program is not accustomed to. The Bears went 9-3 to finish in a tie for third in the Big 12 and earn a berth to the Alamo Bowl.

Griffin's thing was closing, whether it be games – or the season.

He grabbed attention immediately, leading the Bears to a thrilling last-minute win against Texas Christian on Friday, Sept. 2, the night before the season's more formal beginning. A national audience saw him engineer what appeared to be a monumental win, even if the Frogs weren't quite the team that won the Rose Bowl in January.
