GUTHRIE — Blake Belcher is ready for the next chapter.

The Guthrie senior is an Oklahoman All-State offensive lineman and will move on to Tulsa to continue his football playing career.

Belcher took an official visit to Tulsa early in December with about 10 other commits.

“We got to hang out at the hotel,” Belcher said. “We all got to know each other. It's a great group of people.”

Belcher said he met all of the Tulsa coaches and the offensive linemen.

TU coach Bill Blankenship told Belcher that he could see playing time as a freshman, Belcher said, because the Golden Hurricane loses four offensive tackles next season.

“There is a big opening,” Belcher said. “Coach Blankenship said if he thinks I'm ready, I'll get out there and play.

“If I'm not physically ready to play, then I'm not gonna play. He said he's not worried about rushing me or any of the other prospects on the field.”

Belcher's Guthrie team beat three of his future teammates on its way to the Class 5A state championship.

Guthrie beat McAlester and receiver/safety Adam Boyd 28-25 in the semifinals, and the Bluejays topped Lawton MacArthur, with kicker Daniel Schwarz and cornerback Michael Thomas, in the 5A championship game.

Belcher leaves behind a legacy at Guthrie, where he and his fellow seniors led the Bluejays to their third state title in Rafe Watkins' 11 years as coach.

“With coach Watkins and the other coaches, we're always gonna have a good team,” Belcher said.

“We weren't the most talented class, but through the weight program and the way they teach you to do things, I think Guthrie will always be a pretty solid contender for the title.”
