PURCELL — Anadarko's Sheldon Wilson, The Oklahoman's 2011 All-State Offensive Player of the Year, will start his college football career at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Junior College in Miami, he said Thursday.

But, from what NEO coaches are telling Wilson, he'll have plenty of options after he's done there.

“I'm gonna go to NEO,” Wilson said after his Anadarko basketball team beat Bridge Creek 59-32 to open the Heart of Oklahoma Tournament at Purcell High School.

“They've been treating me really good, and they really want me.”

Wilson rushed for 3,335 yards and set state records with 57 rushing and 64 total touchdowns during his senior year.

He capped his high school career with a five-touchdown performance in Anadarko's 35-18 win in the Class 3A state championship game over Cascia Hall. Wilson admitted he was a “knucklehead” when it came to academics for his first two years of high school, and, even though he has been an honor-roll student since his junior year, those early mistakes are costing him.

He had lots of interest from NCAA Division I programs but received no offers. However, that doesn't mean Wilson won't someday suit up at that level.

Wilson said coaches at NEO have told him several Division I representatives — including coaches from Oklahoma — have called expressing interest once he is done playing for the junior college.

“A lot of Division I coaches have been calling asking, ‘Is that Sheldon kid coming to NEO?'” Wilson said.

“The NEO coach said OU had called said they were gonna want me in a couple of years. ... I want to play Division I, and would love to play close to home for Oklahoma.”
