Oklahoma football recruiting: Texarkana lineman John Michael McGee to ditch orange 'Texas' jersey

Oklahoma offensive line commitment John Michael McGee used his time at the U.S. Army All-American bowl to get to know his fellow future Sooners.

John Michael McGee has spent the last few years wearing the orange jersey with “Texas” written across the chest.

But while Texas High in Texarkana, Texas, has produced plenty of talent for the Longhorns over the years, McGee hopes to be like another recent Texas High star.

Quarterback Ryan Mallett left Texas initially for Michigan, where he saw starting time, then transferred to Arkansas where he turned into a star.

McGee (6-foot-4, 260 pounds) doesn't plan on it taking a transfer for him to blossom, but he didn't waste much time deciding to leave Texas to continue his football career. He committed to the Sooners in late June.

The Longhorns were recruiting McGee hard but when Mac McWhorter left Mack Brown's staff, the Sooners quickly came to prominence.

He built a strong relationship with Josh Heupel and, then, James Patton.

McGee used his time at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, in part, to both bond with the other Oklahoma commits in the game and try to attract new recruits to Norman.

McGee was one of the smaller linemen on the teams but, after some initial struggles during the practice week, McGee took advantage of his quickness to hold his own.

Like fellow offensive line commit Kyle Marrs, McGee has used the skills he's picked up playing basketball to help him on the football field.
