State swimming notebook: Yukon qualifies first state relay team in school history

Yukon's girls 200 freestyle team of Jessica McDaniel, Maya Bacon, Ashley Womack and Emily Kaukfirst became the first relay team in school history to compete in the Class 6A swimming state championship meet Friday at Oklahoma City Community College. Yukon junior Jessica McDaniel has qualified for the state competition in each of her three years.

“We've had a team for three years, so this is our third year, and our first time for a relay,” Yukon coach D'Lynne McDaniel. “We were so excited when we made it. There were tears all around when we finally made it.”

NORMAN NORTH RELAY TEAM SETS MARK

Norman North's boys 200 medley relay team of Justin Wu, Alex Zhu, Tomas Elder and Kendon McGehee broke the 1:40-barrier with a time of 1:39.04. Coach Kent Nicholson was pleased with his kids' performance.

“This is the second time in school history to have done it,” Nicholson said. “We're pretty excited about that relay.”

TIGHT TEAM RACE IN 5A

Bixby and Harrah finished first and second in the state championship prelims, respectively, in the boys 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays.
