President Barack Obama's visit to Oklahoma preceded by flight restrictions

by Jennifer Palmer Published: March 21, 2012

The Federal Aviation Administration will ban general aviation flights at some local airports during President Barack Obama's visit Wednesday and Thursday, but airline travelers will likely avoid delays.

The temporary flight restrictions are set to start at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and be lifted at 1 p.m. Thursday, but the times could change according to the president's schedule.

Commercial flights

Travelers who have booked flights at Will Rogers World Airport during the restricted time frame probably will not notice any changes, said Jim Thrash, operations manager for the airport.

Regularly scheduled commercial and cargo flights are expected to be able to fly during the restricted time frame, as well as air ambulance and military aircraft supporting the Secret Service, according to the aviation administration.

General aviation operations will be banned within an area that includes Will Rogers World Airport and Wiley Post Airport, the administration said. Alternative airports include Clarence E. Page Municipal Airport and Sundance Airpark in Oklahoma City, as well as Max Westheimer Airport in Norman, which will allow arrivals and departures but will be under some restrictions.

Types of airport operations banned under the restrictions include flight training, hang gliding, agriculture/crop dusting, banner towing operations, maintenance test flights, sightseeing operations, model aircraft and rocketry, unmanned aircraft systems and utility and pipeline survey operations.
