Among the 250 Oklahoma National Guard soldiers who returned home Wednesday was Purple Heart recipient Spc. Kevin L. Summerlin, of Miami, OK.

Summerlin was presented with his Purple Heart during a homecoming ceremony at the Will Rogers Air National Guard Base.

Staff Sgt. Darron Turner pinned the medal on Summerlin's uniform Wednesday as his fellow soldiers and their loved ones applauded. Turner then hugged Summerlin, who sat in a wheelchair.

Summerlin was shot Aug. 4, and his right leg continues to recover.

He was on a dismounted patrol in Afghanistan's Paktia province when he and his fellow soldiers came under small-arms fire. Sgt. Anthony Del Mar Peterson, 24, of Chelsea, was killed in the attack.

The soldiers who returned Wednesday are part of a larger group of 3,000 Oklahoma National Guardsmen with the 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team returning from a one-year deployment to Afghanistan and Kuwait.

Another 200 soldiers are expected to return Thursday.
