Oil belongs to oil companies, not the United States

Published: April 25, 2012

No matter how many more wells we drill, the oil that comes out of the ground here doesn't belong to the United States. It belongs to the oil companies. They sell their products to the highest bidder, meaning all our oil goes on the world market. Accordingly, we export as much oil as we import. So why not focus on keeping more of our own oil rather than drilling more holes so we can just ship half of it overseas?

The Keystone pipeline would have no meaningful benefit to the U.S. That's Canadian oil on its way to Texas for refining and export to China. We would get some temporary construction jobs but also the inevitability of leaks as it traverses agricultural areas, environmentally sensitive areas, waterways, highways, etc.
