Motorists on the Kilpatrick Turnpike between MacArthur Boulevard and Eastern Avenue may want to give themselves more time to get to their destination.

The speed limit is being reduced from 70 mph to 55 mph in the seven-mile construction area of the project, which will add a lane in each direction to the four-lane roadway, said Jack Damrill, spokesman for the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority.

Motorists also will be asked to refrain from using their mobile phones during the entire length of the project, he said.

Work on widening the busy metropolitan toll road is scheduled to begin Tuesday.

Concrete barrier walls will be put up to protect workers in the construction area, and the traffic lanes will be shifted about three or four feet, Damrill said.

Construction crews will try to maintain all four lanes of traffic during daylight hours, but periodic lane closures will occur, Damrill said.

Most work will take place during overnight hours.

Road crews will be working nights this weekend preparing the construction area, Damrill said.

The work to add a lane in the westbound and eastbound parts of the roadway will start in the eastbound section at MacArthur and progress eastward, he said.

When crews reach Eastern, they will turn around and start work in the westbound section and head toward MacArthur.

The $55 million project should be finished in about a year, Damrill said.
