Rachel Calderon crossed the finish line Sunday with her friend, brimming with joy and emotion for what she'd accomplished.

Calderon and her friend, Nina Barker, ran the half-marathon for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team in Training. Her mother, Linda Calderon was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells, in 2007 and has been in remission four years.

“My goal was to raise $4,000 because she's been in remission four years,” Rachel Calderon said. “I raised $7,500. I wouldn't have been able to do that without Team in Training.”

Calderon, a reporter with KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City, feels called to raise awareness for blood cancer.

“You don't hear about it,” Calderon said. “You know what pink stands for ... but nobody knows purple stands for blood cancer.

“We can beat this. We just need people to talk about it. I think we raised awareness. We raised money, and we honored our loved ones.”
