Rick Uribe crossed the finish line Sunday and was overcome with emotion, his annual self-prescribed penance complete.
Uribe, a 47-year old FedEx employee in Whitehouse, Texas, cried while describing the overwhelming shame he still feels for how he reacted when told the news of the April 19, 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.
“I disregarded the news when they came in my office and told me there was a bombing,” Uribe said.
“It's a point of shame for me that I didn't react, or check the news until hours later.”
Uribe was always a runner but never completed a marathon until the first one in Oklahoma City in 2001. He's come back every year since, and completed 27 marathons total in the last 11 years.
“It's my penance every year for my shame,” Uribe said. “I know it doesn't do much, but it helps me not to take things for granted.”
