Over the next week, Midwest City-Del City Public Schools will break ground at two new school sites and for expansion and renovations projects in the district.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the new Soldier Creek Elementary, 9021 SE 15, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday. A separate ceremony for the opening of a new school building near East Side Elementary, 600 N Key Blvd., is set for 10 a.m. Tuesday.

“We are just thrilled that these projects are under way,” school spokeswoman Stacey Boyer said.

These are the first new schools to be built in the district since 1973, and are the result of a $90.5 million bond package approved in September.

East Side Elementary Principal Rod Boyer said he's excited about the new technology and facilities the new building will bring. He's worked in the district since 1987 and is happy to see the growth and revitalization in the area.

The new school near East Side will affect students at Sooner Rose and Traub Elementary schools as well.
