Persons with Down syndrome brave and trusting

Published: May 5, 2012

George Will's “Gifting a family for 40 years” (Commentary, May 3) is a great story from his lived experience! Will's son, Jonathan Frederick, is turning 40. He has Down syndrome. One of Will's sentences caught my eye: “It is said we are all born brave, trusting and greedy, and remain greedy.” One of the exceptions is a person with Down syndrome. This person, if he is richly welcomed and lovingly cared for, remains brave and trusting … and can remind us of the marvels and mysteries of a life fully embraced no matter what the obstacles. Will's column made my day!
