MIDWEST CITY — At the all-city track championships this year, Northeast track coach Tim Thomas suggested to Mikey Thomas that he run the open 400 in addition to the 100- and 200-meter races that he already was running.

The start of the 400-meter race comes just minutes following the 200 meters in track meets, and the senior sprinter wasn't keen on the idea at first. But after sleeping on it over the weekend, Thomas returned to school the following Monday and told his coach he would run all three individual races.

On Saturday in the Class 2A State Track Meet at Carl Albert High School, Thomas captured four gold medals, winning the 100, 200 and 400 meters while also running the second leg on Northeast's winning 4x100 relay team.

His four gold medals helped propel Northeast to the Class 2A team championship, the Vikings' first boys state track title since 2003.

“I have been looking forward to this day since the beginning of track season,” Thomas said. “I wanted to end my senior year on a good note.”

Thomas posted his personal best time of 50.19 in winning Saturday's 400 meters. He tied his personal best time of 22.04 in the 200 and won the 100 with a time of 10.78.
