Heritage Hall senior Trent Mewbourn was in trouble Tuesday after bogeying the 17th hole at Lake Hefner North.

Chargers golf coach Andy Bogert told Mewbourn, who took a five-stroke lead into the final round of the Class 4A state tournament, he needed a birdie on the par-5 18th to win.

“I kinda thought he was joking; I thought he was trying to get me to two-putt,” Mewbourn said.

Whether he believed his coach or not, it didn't matter. Mewbourn eagled the hole to earn the individual 4A state championship.

Mewbourn topped Cascia Hall's Gabe Rogers and Clinton's Garrison Mendoza by two strokes for the individual title, and his play, combined with impressive final rounds by his teammates, lifted Heritage Hall to the team title as well.

The Chargers topped second-place Elk City by seven strokes.

Senior Michael Helton, who struggled with a 5-over-par score after the first two rounds, went out to the range early Tuesday to practice.

“I told Michael last night, ‘We need a big round out of you,' and he said, ‘You've got it,'” Bogert said.
