Bronson Quickle, 17, was shot Tuesday morning as he and a classmate waited in the 4300 block of NW 16 for a bus to the Justice Alma Wilson SeeWorth Academy. The other boy was pistol-whipped.
Tami Jackson, Quickle's mother, said her son can't talk because he has tubes in his mouth and is on a respirator. A bullet entered his left side and shattered one of his vertebrae. He has had one surgery and is scheduled for another Thursday. More surgeries likely will be needed later, Jackson said.
“He's resting,” Jackson said. “He's doing the best that can be expected. He's in and out. They (doctors) keep him sedated.”
Jackson said doctors have not given the family a long-term prognosis.
“Right now we're focusing on what is immediate, what needs to be done now,” she said.
Police haven't released much information about the shooting, which happened about 5:45 a.m. as the two boys waited in a driveway for the bus to pick them up.
Jackson said the other boy ran two blocks to her house and told her Quickle had been shot. She went to the scene in a pickup with her husband as the other boy ran back.
Quickle was lying halfway in the driveway of a house and halfway in the street as traffic was driving around him. His mother said she called 911. Quickle was talking at the scene as emergency crews arrived.
