Since she was a young girl, Aubrey Wellfare has enjoyed spending time backstage during performances.

Now, she hopes to make a career of it.

Wellfare is a 2008 graduate of Edmond Santa Fe High School. A violist, she attended Oklahoma City University on a music scholarship, where she graduated this month with a degree in music business. Eventually, she hopes to do administrative work for a professional orchestra.

From a young age, Wellfare, 22, has been exposed to performing arts. Her mother, Jean, was a music theater major in college, and her father, Kevin, was a drama major. When Wellfare was a girl, her parents performed in summer acting troupes.

During her parents' performances, Wellfare would wander backstage, looking out toward the audience and enjoying a perspective on the performance that's generally off limits to the audience.

Wellfare said she enjoys seeing things from behind the scenes. While she enjoys performing, she said, she likes the idea of a career in managing performances. She enjoys organizing people and events, she said, and working with an orchestra would allow her to marry that interest with her love of music.

“I knew I didn't want to be a performer, but there's no way I could leave music behind at all,” she said.
