Oklahoma forestry officials are asking people who plan to camp for the Memorial Day weekend to only burn firewood acquired near the campsite.
Officials said Thursday that it may seem economical to buy firewood before leaving home but the practice can spread plant disease and introduce new pests to an area.
The state Agriculture Department says forests can suffer serious damage if a fungus is imported. Even firewood that looks clean and healthy can have insect eggs or microscopic fungi spores that could start a deadly infestation. Likewise, seasoned wood can cause the same problems.
