STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State basketball team had to wait its turn, yet will debut new Nike uniforms for the 2012-13 season.
Like the OSU football team a year ago, Cowboy basketball was selected for a special line of uniforms and will be one of a select group of teams wearing Nike Elite. Again like football, the Cowboys will have four colors to choose from – orange, white, black and gray.
“Really cool uniforms,” said OSU coach Travis Ford. “Really cool.”
That’s the idea of course, and Ford said he hopes the new basketball uniforms offer a style that appeals across all generations of Cowboys, old and new and future, as in recruits. Mike Gundy went so far as to say his team’s edgy new uniforms helped with prospects.
“Absolutely,” Ford said. “I think they’ll be a big hit with our fans and our players and with recruits. We saw what an impact the uniforms could have last year in football. We think it can do the same for us.”
The new basketball uniforms won’t be drastically different. The most dramatic addition is a faint image of Pistol Pete on the back of the jerseys, recognizable behind the number. There is also a nod to the student union, along with “1890,” the year the university was established.
The shorts have “Cowboys” running down the left side, the OSU logo on the waistband and a series of stripes on both sides.
“We worked with Nike on them last year,” Ford said. “They said this style is one of their favorites. I really like the way they turned out and our kids love them.”
