MUSTANG -- “If it runs, bring it!” should be the slogan of the upcoming Veterans Ride and Poker Run to be held Saturday, June 23, in Mustang.
The Mustang Chamber of Commerce, along with military officials invite everyone to come out and enjoy the ride while honoring Oklahoma veterans in a lineup that will start at the Armed Forces Reserve Center (AFRC) on State Highway 152 in Mustang and wind its way north up Mustang Road.
The Veterans Ride will honor all of Oklahoma’s veterans who have served in past and current conflicts. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Mustang AFRC and the Veterans Ride starts promptly at 10 a.m.
Vehicles will line up at 9:30 at the AFRC located at 420 S. Cedar Springs Lane. Several members of the Oklahoma National Guard’s 45th Fires Brigade (FiB) are expected to participate in the event.
Headquarters Battery Sgt. Maj. James Crabtree, 45th FiB, said the purpose of the event is to recognize the sacrifices Oklahoma Veterans have made throughout the decades and also to introduce the 45th Fires Brigade to the Mustang community.
The brigade recently moved into the brand new state-of-the-art facility on Cedar Springs Lane where they are co-located with U.S. Army Reserve units. The AFRCs replaced aging armories throughout the state.
Proceeds will go to the Oklahoma National Guard Scholarship Foundation of Oklahoma and family readiness organizations.
“Motorcycles of all kinds are invited as well as classic cars, hot rods, muscle cars and show cars,” Crabtree said. “We’ll even accept Gremlins, Pintos, station wagons and vans if that’s what participants have to show their support of all that Oklahoma veterans have done for their communities, state and nation.
"Some folks are even planning to decorate their rides with crepe paper and ribbons and so forth. Whatever shows your support will be welcomed.”
Citizens are encouraged to line the sides of the streets to show their support. For more information, call Crabtree at 350-4633.
