— Edmond police are investigating a possible embezzlement of funds at a prominent church.

Police spokeswoman Jennifer Monroe said Monday officers have taken a report from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 924 S Littler.

Monroe said officers will be investigating, but no police report had been written by Monday afternoon.

“We can confirm the report is an embezzlement of funds that we are actively investigating at this time,” she said.

In an email Monday morning, the church issued this statement:

“During a recent parish assessment project, a possible misappropriation of church funds by a church employee was discovered. In consultation with the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, an independent CPA firm was retained to conduct a review of certain books and records of the church to ascertain what had actually happened. While the CPA firm's review was limited to certain accounts and records of the church, it did confirm the misuse of church funds. Accordingly, a report has been filed with the Edmond Police Department. It is now in their hands to investigate and take such actions as they deem appropriate.”

The email also said it would be inappropriate for St. John's to comment further during the investigation, but that it would cooperate fully with authorities.

The employee was not named in the church statement or by police. has disabled the comments for this article.
