High school football: Mustang quarterback Frankie Edwards will operate a diverse offense

However, injuries and other issues put Edwards on the field plenty, even starting a few games.

And though last season ended with just three wins — a rarity in Mustang these days — Edwards received experience that can't be learned in mid-August practices.

“The high school starting experience, you've got to get used to that to be successful,” said Edwards, now a junior. “Last year warmed me up to what it's gonna be like this year. I'll just do what I can do this year.”

His first start came against usual Class 6A heavyweight Edmond Santa Fe, a tough assignment for any QB in the state. And he helped the Broncos pick up wins in two of their last three games, scoring at least 42 points in all three.

But the offense has a different look with Edwards behind center.

Over the last few years, pocket quarterbacks like Brandon Taylor and Jacinto Biorato, have operated a pass-heavy offense. But Edwards brings a dual-threat component more like former Bronco signal-callers Matt Edmonds and Kyle Webster.
