While most children across the Oklahoma City metro area may have the new school year on their minds, some are still learning to cope with the devastation of recent wildfires.
A group of 8-year-old girls at Nichols Hills Elementary wanted to help, and their efforts inspired a schoolwide donation drive to benefit Luther residents affected by fire.
Third-graders Ally Petree, Hallie Harned, Kirby Johnson and Hannah Potter hand-wrote 30 notes for Luther families and put together gift bags filled with perfumed lotions, shampoos and conditioners, drink mixes, cologne and other pampering items.
Hallie said the fragrance-filled lotions and soaps are a special treat.
“It makes you feel good,” she said.
The girls bought many of the goods with money donated to their group, called Helping Hands. They started the group in kindergarten as a way to help others.
“We do this with our own hands,” Kirby said. “And it feels really good to help.”
