A free CarFit event for mature drivers is being presented in conjunction with the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office’s “Older Driver Safety Day” on Tuesday, Aug. 14.

The event will be 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Francis Tuttle Technology Center, Portland campus, located at 3500 NW 150 in Oklahoma City. The first 15 drivers to attend will receive free car window shades.

At the event, mature drivers have the opportunity to see how well they “fit” into their vehicles and how easily they are able to use their vehicle’s safety equipment.

Drivers are encouraged to come by, driving their personal vehicles. Once there, trained CarFit technicians will perform a quick but comprehensive check of how well the driver and his or her vehicle work together to maximize safety. Driving skills will not be evaluated.

The 12-point CarFit check will cover such items as mirror positioning, car seat and headrest adjustment, easy access to gas and brake pedals, clear line of sight over the steering wheel, sufficient room between the driver and the steering wheel, seat belt use and ability to look over one’s shoulder when changing lanes.

Drivers will be given advice on how they can improve their margin of safety.

CarFit is free and open to the public; reservations are not required.
