An unattended suitcase on a downtown sidewalk prompted police to close streets and a parking garage and to evacuate workers from nearby buildings Monday morning.

The suitcase was found about 8:30 a.m. next to a mailbox on the northeast side of the building at 55 N Robinson Ave., police Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow said.

The building houses the offices of the Internal Revenue Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

A building security officer found the suitcase. It contained some coins and jewelry, but nothing dangerous, police reported.
