The unofficial tally tops the previous record of 846 set by the University of Missouri at Rolla.
“We are excited,” said Kay Robinson, director of campus activities. “It was a lot of fun.”
Participants' hands had to stay locked together continuously for five minutes while being photographed and recorded on video. There were 21 witnesses to verify their actions.
Guinness World Records will confirm UCO's record in two weeks, Robinson said.
Last August, UCO broke the world record for the largest game of “Duck Duck Goose” with 1,636 participants. That record was broken two months later with 2,135 people playing in Rogersville, Mo.
The competition was part of Stampede Week, a beginning-of-school celebration.
