From Staff Reports Published: August 31, 2012

No. 1 Bluejays roll

Class 5A champion Guthrie made an impressive debut Friday night, beating Duncan 43-0 behind the play of quarterback Bryan Dutton.

Dutton completed 9 of 12 passes for 151 yards and three TDs, one of those to Kai Callins. He also ran 10 times for 54 yards and a score. Callins finished with 96 yards on just four carries, all in the first half, including a 43-yard touchdown.

The Bluejays held Duncan to 108 total yards and forced three fumbles.

Late TD lifts Union

Justin Silmon's 5-yard run with 5:47 left in the game gave Class 6A No. 1 Tulsa Union a 14-7 victory over No. 3 Jenks in the Backyard Bowl.

The game-winning TD followed a Jenks fumble at the 5. The Trojans had fumbled inside the Union 10 earlier in the fourth quarter.

The only other scoring came in the first quarter. Trey'Vonne Barr'e went around the left side for 45 yards to give Jenks a 7-0 lead, but it lasted only a few seconds as Khalid Kornegay returned the next kickoff 85 yards for a TD.

Female kicker comes through for Tecumseh

Jennifer Goethe made believers of the Tecumseh coaching staff this week, and out of fans of the Savages on Friday night.

Goethe's 22-yard field goal in overtime gave Tecumseh a 16-13 victory over Noble. Her kick came just two days after she joined the team.

Coach Greg George said some of his players called him this week after seeing Goethe, a sophomore soccer player, working out. “They said, ‘Coach, you've got to see this girl kick,'” George said. “She's in my second-hour history class, so I told her to come out and give it a try.”

Goethe took him up on the offer. “We stopped practice, put the ball down on extra points, let her go at it,” George said. “We backed her up five yards, she hit those. We backed her up a little more, she hit those.”
