JONES — Jones got its payback against Hennessey.
The Longhorns walloped two-time defending state champion Hennessey 35-0 on Friday at Tim Wallace Memorial Stadium.
Hennessey had beaten Jones 21-7 on Dec. 9, 2011 in the Class 2A state championship game. Jones (1-1) resides in Class 3A this season, so there will be no rematch in the playoffs against top-ranked Hennessey (1-1).
Jones took advantage of four turnovers. The Eagles managed 150 yards while giving up two interceptions and two fumbles.
Levi Hill led Hennessey with 97 yards rushing on 28 carries. Hill's longest run covered 12 yards on the final play of the game.
Quarterback David Cornell threw for 166 yards and two scores on 10-of-18 passing in Jones' spread attack.
Randal Case single-handedly built Jones' 27-0 lead with two second-quarter touchdowns. Case diagnosed a Hennessey screen play, then snared the pass and returned the interception 40 yards for a 20-0 Jones advantage at 3:17 left in the second quarter.
Case added a 47-yard catch-and-run for another TD after catching the ball at the 30.
Jones stunned Hennessey early as DeAngelo Davis and Dustin Pierce pressured Dylan Hatchel at the 5-yard line. Davis stripped Hatchel of the ball and returned it 5 yards for a 7-0 Jones lead at 1:31 into the game.
In the second quarter, Jones pinned Hennessey at the 10-yard line due to Nathan Lee's 37-yard punt. Jones held and started with the ball at its own 36-yard line thanks to Cody Noll's 19-yard punt return.
Cornell capitalized on the short field to guide his team on a four-play scoring drive. Cornell capped the possession with a 7-yard touchdown run.
Taylor Bilyeu added a fourth-quarter 24-yard touchdown catch-and-run for the final margin.
