MIDWEST CITY — First, lightning struck. Then Coweta thundered to a 21-19 win over Carl Albert on Friday night at Harris Field.

Carl Albert was enjoying a smooth first quarter, leading 7-0 lead. But thunderstorms moved in and caused an hour-long delay. When the game resumed, Coweta took on a different persona. The Tigers struck Carl Albert's defense with a 33-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Hayden Holmes to Randall Smith on the first play after the weather delay.

The touchdown sparked Coweta to a win in front of a shocked Carl Albert crowd that saw its team fall to 0-2 on the season.

Holmes threw for two more touchdowns, a 15-yarder to Hunter Raspberry and a 39-yarder to Jakeem Johnson. Holmes finished with 135 yards passing and 43 rushing.

Coweta's defense was equally impressive. Carl Albert's biggest play of the game was a muffed snap by punter Gavin LaValley. Instead of being tackled near his team's own goal line, the 6-foot-3, 245-pound punter/lineman rambled 68 yards to set up Titan quarterback Steven Thompson's second of three rushing touchdowns on the night.

Thompson, who ran for 136 yards, set his team up for a game-winning drive with a 27-yard keeper that moved Carl Albert to midfield with less than five minutes in the game. Four plays later, Thompson failed to hit his receiver on fourth-and-long. Coweta took over and ran out the remaining time.

The Tigers are 2-0, which includes a victory over defending Class 4A state champion Wagner.

Carl Albert will look for its first win next week against Duncan.
