Warren Spahn Award up for grabs
Washington's Gio Gonzalez, Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw among contenders
After winning both the Cy Young Award and the Warren Spahn Award last season, Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw has posted a strong season during a pennant race.
But it may not be enough for him to repeat as winner of the Spahn Award, which is awarded annually to Major League Baseball's top left-handed pitcher.
With left-handers such as Washington's Gio Gonzalez and Tampa Bay's David Price dominating this season, the award is still up for grabs.
Here is a breakdown of the standings entering this week.
Gio Gonzalez, Washington, 19 wins, 2.93 ERA, 191 Ks
In perhaps the most impactful trade of the offseason, the Nationals acquired a pitcher arguably more valuable than Stephen Strasburg. Gonzalez leads the majors with 19 wins and a .206 opponents' batting average.
David Price, Tampa Bay, 18 wins, 2.54 ERA, 181 Ks
Price has been nearly unhittable since the All-Star break. Returned from shoulder soreness on Friday in key win over Yankees.
Clayton Kershaw, L.A. Dodgers, 12 wins, 2.70 ERA, 206 Ks
A lingering hip issue has Kershaw scheduled to visit a hip specialist next week in New York.
Chris Sale, Chicago White Sox, 17 wins, 2.78 ERA, 173 Ks
Sale has been one of this season's surprises. Shut out the Twins for six innings Friday night.
Cole Hamels, Philadelphia, 15 wins, 3.06 ERA, 192 Ks
Signed a massive six-year contract worth $144 million this season. He might have earned more as a free agent. Instead, he has Philadelphia making noise in the wild-card race.
