REMOTE PATROL -- Impressed with J.W. Walsh's running skills? The Fox Sports broadcast team certainly was, calling on Oklahoma State to give him a little more freedom.

After initially bemoaning the loss of OSU freshman quarterback Wes Lunt to a knee injury, Fox Sports broadcasters Joel Meyers and Brian Baldinger ended the Louisiana-Lafayette telecast Saturday afternoon thinking it might be a blessing in disguise.

The strong play of back-up quarterback J.W. Walsh led them to believe the Cowboys will have a more diversified attack when they return to action against Texas on Sept. 29.

“I would open the offense up a little more and give him the freedom because he is really good on his feet,” said Baldinger, whom called Lunt a “Weeden clone,” which is a compliment since Brandon Weeden is starting for the Cleveland Browns as a rookie.

“He's a coach's son and he plays like it,” Meyers said of Walsh, who passed for 347 yards and four touchdowns. “He was very poised.”

They complimented Walsh's running ability after several nice runs.

“Pretty serious wheels,” Meyers said.

“The play is never over with this guy,” Baldinger said. “He can just rescue it.”

After Lunt was taken off the field, the sportscasters thought the injury might be severe. “This is just a disaster,” Baldinger said. “Terrible feeling for him and his family.”

However, sideline reporter Jim Knox later reported that Lunt would be out only two to three weeks.

SHORT TAKES

* Overhyping the game at the start, Meyers said Louisiana-Lafayette was hoping to pull off an upset similar to Lafayette-Monroe over Arkansas last week.

* Later Meyers wondered if the Ragin' Cajun's travel problems Friday were a prelude of what was to come Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium. “Was it an omen for Mark Hudspeth and the Ragin' Cajuns from Layafette when the plane was struck by lightning before they left?”
