Former University of Central Oklahoma president dies

Bill Lillard, UCO president from 1975 to 1992, died Tuesday, according to a school news release.

Bill Lillard, former University of Central Oklahoma president, died Tuesday, according to a school news release. He was 87.

Lillard's presidential tenure lasted from 1975 to 1992. He was president when the school's name changed from Central State University.

A native of Wilburton in southeastern Oklahoma, Lillard earned a bachelor's degree in education from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant. He went on to earn his master's and doctorate from the University of Oklahoma. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame in 1994, according to the release.

Lillard worked in the Oklahoma City Public School system for 20 years in various roles before taking the position at UCO. His wife, Mary Helen, died last year.
