The city will install new sirens around town during the next two weeks.
The project was funded by a $200,000 bond issue approved in July 2011.
The eight sirens will be installed in the middle of each mile section of Del City and will be solar-powered, Del City Fire Maj. Brandon Pursell said.
The new system will allow for the broadcasting of prerecorded voice messages over the sirens or, if necessary, live messages from city emergency personnel.
The current system does not have that capability.
“One way to think about it is a citywide public address system,” Pursell said.
Pursell said Saturday afternoon tests of the sirens will be preceded by a message informing residents it is only a test.
“This is good for people who may be new to the area or are visiting because they might not know that we do our tests on Saturdays,” Pursell said.
The system can be activated from Fire Station No. 1, police dispatch or city hall, Pursell said.
He said the current system remains adequate but is aging quickly, and with that age comes added costs.
“We're running into repair and maintenance costs because it's an older system and it's harder to find parts,” he said.
