ON THE HOT SEAT -- Mike Stoops' defense doesn't need to be dominant Saturday in Norman. It just needs to play well enough to promote hope that better days are on the way.

The last time Mike Stoops matched wits with his former boss, Bill Snyder ruled the day. In the 2003 Big 12 title game, Kansas State rushed for 292 yards, threw for 227 yards and won 35-7.

That was Stoops' final game as defensive coordinator before taking the Arizona coaching job. Now Stoops is back at OU, again coordinating the defenses for his brother, and his first major assignment is Saturday against Snyder's Wildcats.

Bob Stoops brought his brother back to fortify a defense that was dented three times last season: losses of 41-34 to Texas Tech, 45-38 to Baylor and 44-10 to OSU.

Last season, OU held KSU to 32 second-half yards, and the Sooners won 58-17. Mike Stoops' defense doesn't have to be that dominant, but it needs to show well to make the Sooners believe that even better days are ahead.
