— A 15-year member of the Midwest City-Del City School Board resigned this month, and the board is seeking to appoint someone to the vacant post.

Melissa Elzo notified the board she'd be stepping aside as a Ward 1 board member because of health reasons. Since she was in the first half of her term, whoever is appointed to her position must stand for election in February.

Board president Jimmie Nolen said a new member will be appointed during the Oct. 8 board meeting following a public reception for Elzo.

“She is probably one of the most gracious people I know and has a heart for children,” Nolen said of Elzo. “She'll be hard to replace.”

Nolen said ideal candidates for the school board would have a passion for children and education and must live within the Ward 1 boundaries.

“Although we as a board set policy, we want someone who can see those policies mean something specific for the children,” Nolen said. “Someone who has the time to invest in doing the things school board members do and who will be active in the schools.”

Application packets are available at the district offices or online and must be returned by Oct. 1 to the superintendent's office at 7217 SE 15.
