Oklahoma State football notebook: J.W. Walsh plans to keep running aggressively

Even with one quarterback, Wes Lunt, already injured, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy has stressed he will not demand that J.W. Walsh, the Cowboys' probable starter against Texas, slides or gets out of bounds when he takes off running. Gundy doesn't want to take away Walsh's aggressive style, one of the biggest strengths of his game.

Walsh doesn't want to change, either.

“I like to keep going forward and lower my shoulder and try to get as many yards as I can,” Walsh said. “To an extent, not where it's just stupid and going into four defenders and getting killed.”

GILBERT WANTS TO BE KNOWN AS MORE THAN A KICK RETURNER

Justin Gilbert developed rapidly as a cornerback during his sophomore season, tallying five interceptions — three of them coming against top-10 NFL Draft picks Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III and Ryan Tannehill — while teaming up with Brodrick Brown to create a formidable secondary duo to take on the Big 12's high-powered offenses.

Yet Gilbert feels many still see him as a freak athlete — he played quarterback in high school — or a speedy special teams weapon, rather than a shutdown corner.

Shifting that perception is his biggest goal this season.

“Just developing more as a cornerback,” Gilbert said. “Not so much as a kick returner, which is what most people see me as.”

OPPONENT WATCH: TEXAS HAS PLAYED 14 FRESHMEN SO FAR

Texas has already played 14 true freshmen through its first three games, the second-highest total in the nation entering this week's games, Texas officials told the Austin American-Statesman. LSU, Ohio State and TCU have played 15 true freshmen.
