Midwest City Council approves grant from trust
MIDWEST CITY -- The Midwest City Council on Sept. 25, approved the acceptance of an Oklahoma City Community Foundation Margaret Annis Boys Trust Grant in the amount of $15,000 to provide plant materials in the implementation of Phase 1 of a residential median improvement project located in the original square mile.
In addition, the Council approved the authorization of a $5,000 local match, which was a condition of the foundation grant.
The original square mile neighborhood contains fifteen (15) grassy medians of which five (5) have been selected to construct rain garden demonstration projects and pocket parks, according to Terri Craft, grants manager for Midwest City. It is these five medians that represent Phase 1.
“A rain garden component, utilizing storm water drainage will reduce runoff pollutants while providing a landscaped area that is easy to maintain and requires little watering,” said Craft.
The larger medians can become pocket parks, which may include trees, grasses and benches within walking distance of neighborhood residents.
This Phase 1 project is part of a much larger, comprehensive plan for the revitalization of the city’s original mile. The comprehensive plan calls for additional streetscape, gateway signage, curbing, street resurfacing, parks, home refurbishing and much more.
