NORMAN — The French consul general paid a visit to students participating in a French language immersion program at Ronald Reagan Elementary School.
Consul General Frederic Bontems toured the school at 1601 24th Ave. SE on Wednesday and observed a pilot program that immerses selected kindergarten and first-grade students in the French language.
About 50 students are participating in the special curriculum in which they hear and speak nothing but French for the first half of the school day.
Bontems' visit was part of a consular summit in Oklahoma organized by the governor's office that brings together consuls general and trade representatives of various countries with Oklahoma business and government leaders.
Countries participating are Canada, France, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Russia and Great Britain.
The Governor's International Team, which organized the summit, promotes greater economic, cultural and educational ties between Oklahoma and the countries.
The summit's purpose is to develop possible export markets for Oklahoma businesses and to promote foreign investment in Oklahoma.
