BETHANY — It was the perfect example of old-school, run-first football on a damp Friday night.

The Perkins-Tryon Demons played physical en route to a 43-20 district win over Bethany in the Bronchos’ third annual Children’s Center Bowl.

Perkins used big plays on offense, and the defense delivered five turnovers.

The two schools spent the week raising money for The Children’s Center, a private, nonprofit pediatric hospital located just a few minutes away from Bethany High School. At halftime, the schools presented an $8,100 check to The Children’s Center; that money was raised before the game. Another $2,000 was raised during the contest.

“We got to tour the facility this morning and what they do. We were fortunate enough that they invited us to be at that Bowl,” Perkins-Tryon coach Lloyd Wertman said. “I wished the (total raised) could have been more. I think that was a good amount, but I was really proud to be associated with that cause because it’s very special.”

The Children’s Center focuses on helping kids with complex medical and physical disabilities.

Perkins-Tryon’s rushing attack wasted no time getting on the board. Sophomore Jacob Peyton broke free for a 30-yard run in the first quarter.
