Hunting seasons open Monday
Oklahoma's deer archery season opens statewide on Monday. Last year bow hunters in Oklahoma checked in 24,908 deer, a record high for an archery season.
The archery deer season runs through Jan. 15. Also opening Monday is the fall archery season on wild turkeys and the bow season on black bears in southeastern Oklahoma.
The overall season cap of 20 bears that had been imposed by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation has been eliminated this season.
Bear archery season will be open through Oct. 21. It is followed by a bear muzzleloader season that opens Oct. 27 and runs concurrent with the deer muzzleloader season through Nov. 4.
Black bear hunting is allowed only in Pushmataha, Latimer, Le Flore and McCurtain counties.
BioBlitz begins on Friday
Oklahoma's annual BioBlitz will be Friday and Saturday at the Washita National Wildlife Refuge and Foss State Park.
Held each year by the Oklahoma Biological Survey, volunteers conduct a 24-inventory of all living things (plants, insects, animals, etc) found on the refuge and in the park.
The survey begins Friday at 4 p.m and is open to the public.
For more information, visit www.biosurvey.ou.edu or call the refuge at (580) 664-2205.
