Typical OSU game. High marks on offense. Low marks on defense.

J.W. Walsh: A. Walsh wasn't particularly polished. He didn't always throw the ball to the right spot or make the correct decision. But he played through adversity and got better as the game went on. Walsh's numbers were superb — 18 of 27 passes for 301 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Walsh also had a 50-yard run off a quarterback draw that led to the go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

Third-down defense: D. Texas converted nine of 17 third downs, including six of nine in the first half. On third down, Ash completed 10 of 12 passes, though not all the completions went for a first down.

Todd Monken: B. The OSU offensive coordinator did a super job scaling down the offense to fit Walsh's talents. The run game worked well in the first half, and when Texas stiffened, Monken shifted to pass plays that Walsh hit. But Monken might have sat on the quarterback draw too long. The quarterback run game, one of Walsh's strengths, didn't appear until the fourth quarter. And OSU went conservative at the end; after reaching first down at the Texas 13-yard line in the waning minutes, the Cowboys went to three straight run plays, the first two to third-team tailback Des Roland. OSU settled for Quinn Sharp's 24-yard field goal to take a 36-34 lead with 2:34 left.

Special teams: C. A variety of calamities struck OSU early. Quinn Sharp dropped a punt snap, though he somehow got off a 26-yard kick left-footed. OSU gave up a 100-yard kickoff return to D.J. Monroe to go down 21-14. David Glidden tried to catch a punt inside his 10-yard line and fumbled, though the Cowboys alertly recovered the ball. And Sharp was just wide right on a 53-yard field goal attempt. But Desmond Roland's 36-yard return off a pooch kickoff ignited OSU after UT took a 28-20 lead.
