College football: Va. Tech's Frank Beamer facing one of his toughest coaching jobs

by Berry Tramel Published: October 5, 2012

Has any program in America been more consistent than Virginia Tech? The Hokies have won 10 or 11 games in 13 of the last 17 seasons, including eight straight.

11-3, 11-3, 10-3, 10-4, 11-3, 10-3, 11-2, 10-3. That's the Hokies' annual record since joining the ACC in 2004.

But now Virginia Tech is 3-2 and lucky it's not worse – in the season opener, they rallied to force overtime and beat Georgia Tech. The Hokies have lost 35-17 at Pitt and 27-24 to Cincinnati in Landover, Md.

Frank Beamer is coach for life at Virginia Tech, which he has turned into a nationally-prominent program. But Beamer's efforts to lift the Hokies above that 11-3 treadmill are going in reverse.

Virginia Tech has upcoming games at Clemson and Miami, plus a home game against Florida State. Saturday, the Hokies play at 3-2 North Carolina, desperately needing a victory. Beamer faces one of his toughest coaching jobs.
