Regarding “Ersland appeals murder conviction” (News, Oct. 2): Jerome Ersland's downfall was the second gun. He should have used the phone on the counter to call 911 instead of going for the second gun. The video clearly shows that he wasn't in danger because he had to walk past the robber to get that gun. I believe in “make my day” laws, but you need to be reasonable. Ersland wasn't. That's why he was convicted. We're a nation of laws, not vigilante justice.
As for his appeal, Irven Box isn't responsible for the guilty verdict. That's on Ersland. His new attorney is just grandstanding. The governor is right to follow the law and wait for the Pardon and Parole Board's recommendation. Clogging the governor's office with petitions is just another publicity stunt. All the grandstanding about the second robber being free is just noise.
