YUKON — An El Reno man was struck and killed early Friday as he walked along Interstate 40 near State Highway 92.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported the incident shortly before 5 a.m. and closed the eastbound lanes temporarily.

Yukon police had contact with the victim earlier after he called the ambulance service and asked to be taken to the hospital for a mental evaluation.

“The hospital checked him and felt he didn't meet the criteria for detention,” Chief John Corn said.

Officers were called when the man refused to leave the hospital after being discharged.

“They offered him a ride, but he refused,” Corn said.

Officers were called again when the man left the hospital and knocked on the windows of a nearby 24-hour Anytime Fitness center. He again refused an offer for a ride, Corn said.

A short time later, officers received the call of a pedestrian fatality on the nearby Interstate.

The man was struck by an eastbound car carrying four people on their way to the Oklahoma City airport. Two people in the car suffered minor injuries and were taken by ambulance to the hospital, Corn said.

The identity of the victim hasn't been released, but Corn said he was from El Reno.
