Big 12 football: OU's Bob Stoops needs win vs. Texas to keep Big 12 edge

by Berry Tramel Published: October 12, 2012

Since arriving in Norman, Bob Stoops has won the Big 12 title in every even-numbered season, 2000 through 2010, with a 2007 title thrown in to pad the total.

But Stoops' even-numbered domination is in peril. The Sooners already have lost to Kansas State, and a loss to Texas on Saturday could drop the Sooners two games back in the Big 12 race.

Stoops doesn't dominate the Big 12 like he once did. OU is 18-9 in its last 27 conference games. In the nine seasons from 2000 through 2008, Stoops lost 10 conference games.

Beat Texas on Saturday, and the Sooners remain in Big 12 contention. Plus, Stoops keeps his foot on Mack Brown, on whom he holds an 8-5 series edge. But lose to Texas, and it's one more sign that Stoops' program has slipped from its previously-exalted status.
