“Rizzoli & Isles: Last to Die” (Ballantine Books, $27) by Tess Gerritsen is another well-done thriller from the author. Within a year, three families die in apparent accidents. There seems to be no connection, but in each case one child survives.

After the death of the last family, detective Jane Rizzoli moves one of the three surviving children to a special school in the Maine woods called Evensong. It's a strange place, secluded and protected. All the teachers and students have survived traumatic incidents.

Medical Examiner Maura Isles has had her young friend, Julian, himself a survivor, recruited for Evensong. Isles decides to pay Julian a visit. But it's not the healing haven the founders envisioned, and the remaining children become targets for an evil and sinister plot.
