Oklahoma was in first place after the opening round of the 34th annual Susie Maxwell Berning Classic on Monday at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman.

The Sooners finished 4-under-par 284 as a team. OU had a five-stroke lead over Notre Dame, Texas Tech and Texas State. Individually, OU teammates Emily Collins, Chirapat Jao-Javanil and Anne-Catherine Tanguay each shot a 2-under 70 and were tied for fifth place. They trailed co-leaders Tonje Daffinrud of Denver, Kimberly Kaufman of Texas Tech and Lindsey Weaver of Notre Dame by just two strokes.

Oklahoma is trying for a second consecutive Berning championship. The tournament continues at 10:20 a.m. Tuesday.

*Central Oklahoma freshman Eric Kline finished with a 4-under-par 67 Monday to lead individuals at the Missouri Western Invitational golf tournament in St. Joseph, Mo. Kline, a former Ponca City High standout, helped the Bronchos take a 10-shot standings lead over Washburn (Kan.). Kline leads Zach Tucker of Northeastern State by three strokes in the medalist race.

The tournament continues Tuesday.

SMART ON TISDALE WATCH LIST

Marcus Smart of Oklahoma State is on the watch list for the new Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Year award. Smart is one of 10 players on the watch list, including Big 12 freshmen Isaiah Austin of Baylor and Cameron Ridley of Texas. The winner will be announced at the Devon Energy College Basketball Awards ceremony on April 15, 2013, at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.
